Visiting lecturer Sina Rauschenbach, of Potsdam University, will present:

"Jewish-Christian Messianic Expectations in a New World Setting: Luis Carvajal and the Franciscans"

Born into a New Christian family of crypto-Jews in a Castilian village, Luis de Carvajal the Younger (1567-1596) moved to the Americas around 1580. Following several Inquisitions, he and his family were convicted of “Judaizing” and sentenced to death.

Dr. Rauschenbach uses Carvajal’s autobiography and trial documents to analyse the meaning of “the Americas” in Carvajal’s thought and to reflect upon possible relations with Mexican Franciscans and millenarians with whom he had contact.
