Howard Stein grew up ten miles west of Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Hebrew School and services at Congregation Beth Shalom in Pittsburgh. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967 (historical musicology) and 1972 (medical/psychiatric anthropology) respectively. After teaching in the Department of Psychiatry in Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, from 1972-1978, he spent the remainder of his life and career in Oklahoma City, teaching clinical behavioral science at the Univ of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He fell in love with rural Oklahoma wheat farming families and culture, and came to specialize in rural Oklahoma culture, medicine, and health. From 2012-2017 he was group process consultant and facilitator to the American Indian Diabetes Prevention Center.
He is author, co-author, and editor of 32 books, 10 of which are books of poetry.
